My Favorite Woman’s Watch, The Cartier Tank

by Steve Davidson | Sep 15, 2023

Rudolph Valentino, Duke Ellington, Gary Cooper, Clark Gable, Ingrid Bergman, Alain Delon, Jaqueline Kennedy, Muhammad Ali, Truman Capote, Princess Di, Jennifer Aniston, Barak Obama – all share the same watch preference! What watch could be shared by five generations of beautiful people? Only one, of course – the Cartier Tank. Conceived by Louis Cartier (grandson of the founder) from the early days of the wristwatch, the Cartier Tank has now been in continuous production for over 100 years! How extraordinary that this elegant watch, inspired by the treads of a World War I French Tank, has been loved and coveted for a century.

It’s enduring appeal isn’t a consequence of evolutionary change or “updates”. Rather, it was born perfect. The thin rectangular case with tiny gold screws on the side and back, roman numeral dial, sapphire cabochon crown….it really can’t be improved upon. From the beginning, the Cartier was coveted and exclusive – only nine were made in its first year of production! Of course more are manufactured now and, while originally only made from gold or most rare – platinum, today Cartier has steel versions. In the eighties and nineties, sterling silver and sterling with gold overlay (vermeil) were available in the Le Must de Cartier line. Whatever the vintage or metal, quartz or mechanical movement, a Cartier Tank Louis feels and looks wonderful on the wrist. A slender perfectly refined design from the early days of Cartier Joaillerie, glamorous provenance, impeccable quality….you might feel like a movie star when you wear yours!
