Fine Watch Repair Service in New England

A fine mechanical or quartz wristwatch will last for generations – functional and beautiful after many decades.  Unlike a smart watch and most other consumer products that eventually end up as landfill, your Swiss made timepiece is truly an heirloom.  Wonderful watches involve the work of artists, craftspeople, mechanical ingenuity, sometimes genius.  Your Swiss watch is well worth properly maintaining!

Free Service to Demagnetize Your Watch

If your mechanical wristwatch suddenly runs slow, or more commonly runs too fast, it may be “magnetized”.

Watches have precise, tiny metal components that can be affected by the magnetic fields all around us…particularly phones!

Some modern and vintage watch movements use special materials or a lead capsule to protect against this hazard.  However, the vast majority of older wristwatches are vulnerable to magnification and will periodically need to be de-magnetized.

Fortunately, this is super easy to do.  Every watchmaker has a $200 black box that, with a press of a button, will demagnetize your wristwatch!  If your watch isn’t keeping time, bring it in – we’ll put it on the magic black box gratis!  Often, that’s all that’s needed!

Rolex Watch Repair in Boston and New England

Rolex watches are incredibly robust – moisture and shock resistant and often still  reasonably  accurate after decades of daily wear without service.  As a consequence, many Rolex owners put off routine (as in every 5-10 years!) maintenance, subscribing to the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” philosophy.  Well, if your Rolex is worn infrequently, say for only special occasions, and never exposed to water, there’s no great harm in delaying service.  However, if you use your Oyster Rolex as intended, wearing it daily, exposed to moisture, dust, and all your daily exertions, periodic maintenance is crucial!

For example, an older Rolex Datejust (or any Oyster cased Rolex) has a crown that screws down to seal out dirt and moisture.  With age, the threads will wear and the gasket will dry out/deteriorate, compromising the integrity of the case.  The remedy is a new Rolex crown, tube, and gasket costing around $150.  Putting off this essential maintenance could expose the movement and dial to water damage.  If that happens, damages can run to a couple thousand dollars.

Another reason not to put off servicing your Rolex:  With time, eventually, the oils that lubricate all the tiny metal components that comprise your Rolex’s mechanical movement will dry out.  Without a periodic disassembly, ultrasonic cleaning, and lubrication, friction will damage the internal components of your Rolex.  Like a seized automobile engine out of oil, the movement may even stop running altogether!

If your Rolex, like most, is on a steel or gold bracelet, it too will benefit from some maintenance.  However, you won’t need a seasoned watchmaker to care for your Rolex Jubilee or Oyster bracelet.  A simple periodic cleaning with soap, water and a toothbrush will keep it looking good and also prevent premature wear.  Atmospheric dust/dirt accumulates between the links, causing friction, and wearing out the gold or steel pins that hold your band together.  This is part of the reason older Rolex metal bands are frequently stretched out.  At Rewind, we’ll ultrasonically clean your Rolex bracelet as part of any service.

Rolex watches are marvelous, living, kinetic, precious mechanical instruments -gracefully, beautifully, ticking over every second of your day and life.  Like any living thing, it will need a little love periodically, namely 5-10 year service intervals.  At Rewind, our watchmaker has repaired and serviced hundreds of Rolex over the last 30 years.  We have seen every issue and pride ourselves that, once serviced/repaired by Rewind, your Rolex will be accurate and reliable for years.
